D A Bell

Born Dorothy Ann Dickinson, the last of six children, I grew up in southern Iowa, moved to Oregon’s Willamette Valley at the age of eleven with my parents and an older sister. I picked strawberries and beans in the summer to earn money for school clothes. I played the snare drums in the high school band. I loved history, geography, speech class and school plays. Sticking to art and literature courses, I made the honor roll.

One wintry day in November, at the age of sixteen, the boy that had pestered me from the moment he saw me when I started the sixth grade on my first day of school in Oregon invited me to go for a scooter ride with him up into the coastal range. After that, we became inseparable, and here we are, fifty years later, very close partners in everything we do.

After high school, I attended vocational school, taking a clerk stenographer course, which I never used. After our two children began school, I started to write Regency Romances to entertain myself. I sent them off to publishers now and then. I facilitated a writer’s critique group for several years and learned a lot from fellow writers. I took writing courses at a community college. But, I think I learned the most by submitting my work to publishers, editors and agents, and getting feedback.

Laid low for nearly twenty-five years with arthritis, forced to use a battery-powered cart, I took up aquatic exercise and became an instructor. I retired after eighteen years of instructing, and now go to the pool and do my own thing. After two surgeries to replace my knees, I went to work on myself and lost eighty-five pounds, which I have kept off. With renewed energy, I put more into my writing, submitted my work, then rewrote and kept submitting, which I will continue to do.

My husband and I live in Central Oregon with two West Highland White terriers and one big, angora tuxedo cat. I enjoy gardening and landscaping. I am a member of the Central Oregon Writers Guild, Willamette Writers and Romance Writers of America.
