Jim Hawkey

Historical Novelist. Author of the MARIANA DE LA MAR series of medieval mysteries.

I started out by studying theology and religous philosophy (University of London) with a view to becoming a priest, but that didn't happen and I became, back in the day, a wandering poet, then settled down as a teacher, working in the UK, Spain, Morocco and Greece.

I write the kind of stories I love to read: adventures for the thinking reader with an interest in esoteric religion; life in the raw as it seems to me it must once have been lived; fiction set in an alternative past (alternative in that it contains imaginary characters, along with historical characters doing and saying things there is no record of them ever saying or doing).

I like Paul Doherty's medieval mysteries; Roberta Gellis Magdalene la Bâtarde series; Rosemary Hawley Jarman's medieval novels and short stories; Alice Borchardt's Silver Wolf series; Anya Seton's Katherine and Avalon; Marilyn Todd's I, Claudia series; and many other authors (I'm a great reader!) including Alys Clare, Rebecca Reisert, Freda Warrington, Ariana Franklin and Judith Tarr.
