Josie Malone

As a child, I loved to dream away the days in an old cherry tree on my family’s pony farm. In my imagination, the tree became a beautiful Arabian stallion, a medieval castle, and even a pirate ship. On rainy days, I headed for my fort in the hayloft. While the rain thudded on the cedar-shingled roof, I read books, eventually trading Carolyn Keene for Georgette Heyer.

For my newest book, The Hero Spell, I used the memories of my childhood home as a setting. A pony farm definitely needs an ensemble cast of four-legged critters—in other words, ponies. I drew the fictional ponies in this story from the ones that made our home so special. One of my favorite ponies was Luck of The Irish, Lucky for short. He frequently escaped from any stall, pasture or paddock—we called him our “Houdini” pony. When I was a kid and rode him, he was young and in his prime. We shared many a picnic lunch on long trail rides with our 4-H Club, the original Everett Silver Flying A’s led by Herb and Virginia Weinz.

We rode all over the place, back in the 1960s-1970s when paradise hadn’t yet been paved in western Washington. Summer trail rides lasted all day. There were trees and wildlife where houses now stand. Parades, horse-shows, camping trips, and the county fair—what child could ask for anything more? The Silver Flying A’s, was as we kids called it, the best “4-H club in sight,” thanks to Virginia and Herb Weinz who are gone now, but the memories remain.

I still have horses. I can’t imagine life without them. Today, I live on the family ranch in the Cascade foothills of Washington State. I usually write at night after a long day on the ranch. Some days are longer and harder than others, since there are thirty-two horses to look after, along with other assorted animals.

I’ve had a lot of adventures over the years—and I plan to write all about them. I hope you enjoy reading about them!
