Leah St James

Leah's fascination with all things written began when she picked up her first Dr. Seuss book, and she has rarely been seen without a novel close at hand since. Although she's held many positions over the years, from office manager to transcript editor, writing is her passion, and after devouring every romance novel in the local library, she decided to put some of the ever-present words in her head to paper. During the course of her experimentations, she discovered that she enjoys delving into the deepest of human emotions--love and hate, bravery and cowardice, joy and despair--and how we, as human beings, relate to each other. Her greatest hope is to touch her readers' hearts and help them experience the joy that only love can bring.

Married with two grown sons, Leah is a native of the beautiful Central Jersey Shore but now enjoys the peace and quiet of Virginia's Hampton Roads.

A Note From Leah St James

Releasing a novel is a bit like giving birth.  :-)  It all starts when you receive the happy news: You have a publishing contract! In a year or so you'll have an honest-to-goodness published novel to your name! You hop around for a while, unable to contain your excitement. Then you call or e-mail the happy news to your mother/husband/sister/brother/best friends, writing friends, critique partners, casual acquaintances, and assorted others you meet during the course of the next several days (e.g., people in line at the bank). Eager to get to the next step, you watch your e-mail for updates from your publisher.

Before you know it, you're putting together the book's blurb and excerpt. You agonize over every word and phrase, trying to give your baby (i.e., book) every possible advantage for its launch into the world. You decide on a final title and again try to imagine how a change in a word here or there will affect your baby's reception. If you're lucky, you get to provide input for the cover. Then the cover is released, and there it is, in living color, the artist's depiction of your story with your title and your name across the front! You're beyond excited once more, and you share the image with your mother/husband/sister/brother/best friends, casual acquaintances, and people in grocery lines.

Before you've barely had a chance to process the joy, it's time for edits. Oh, you think to yourself. You mean my baby (book) isn't perfect the way it is?? But you trust your editor, so you get to work, bear down, and polish that manuscript until you think you've memorized all 300-some pages verbatim. You pour over galleys with a magnifying glass in an effort to catch even the tiniest typos...and miss one or two anyway (which well-meaning friends will point out after you receive the first batch of printed copies).

You plan parties and book signings, send out invitations via e-mail and all the social networking sites you've joined in the past six months.  You blog, give interviews, and chat on reader/author forums. When "launch day" arrives, you tell yourself you've done everything you can to prepare for this day, and you cross your fingers. And then the really hard work starts...trying to get the next book published. :-)

Since the release of Surrender to Sanctuary last year, I've been humbled by the support and encouragement of so many, and am so grateful for those who have given me the opportunity to keep going.

Happy reading to all!
