Sharon Ervin

I was Sooner born, grew up in Winfield, Kansas and Paris, Texas, got a B.A. degree in journalism from the University of Oklahoma, made a deal with the Associated Press Bureau Chief in Oklahoma City to work two years on a mid-size newspaper, become fluent in a second language, and be placed in an overseas bureau. My dream career as a foreign correspondent was set, except...without realizing it, I had become too attached to my best friend, Bill. When I couldn't get happy any place without him, we married. My newspaper career was then diverted by the U.S. Army. After the tour in Vietnam, hard on those "who only stand and wait," Bill made the sacrifice worthwhile. He got home, went to law school on the G.I. Bill, became an assistant district attorney, then an associate district judge, was elected to the Oklahoma Legislature, then settled in private law practice. Meanwhile, I birthed four children, got a private pilot's license (either flying lessons or therapy), was a campaign manager, a den mother (two years with each son), Girl Scout Cookie Mother, band booster, president of the quarterback club, ran the regional wrestling meet concession stands, sold ads for athletic teams, sweltered in band booster fireworks stands, and began working half-days in Bill's office, more recently attending our younger son in his last year as he succumbed to cancer. I wouldn't trade any of it, not even for hours imbeded with troops in the Middle East or trailing law enforcement into the bloodiest homicides or rubbing shoulders with presidents and kings. Now I write novels, with myriad characters based on people I've known and loved or only imagined. Life prepares one to write. I believe the old adage, "Everyone owes the world a book." I am working on Manuscript #26 (so far 11 have been published) and encouraging others to write, letters, notes, blogs, books, anything...to share their life's lessons. Writing is great for morale, is excellent therapy.
