Suzanne Shanken

Suzanne Shanken received a university scholarship by winning a short story contest and earned bachelor degrees in both British Archeology and Ancient Religions.  Her love of writing found a home in the university newspaper and while student teaching creative writing classes.  Suzanne studied Arthurian legends extensively.  Her goal was to write tales where the Arthurian women are heroes, not villains.  She achieved this goal after the publication of her book “The False Gwenevere” in 2012.

As a history buff, Suzanne enjoys attending Renaissance Faires where she participates in battle reenactments and archery competitions.  She lives 7,000 feet up in a small mountain community, where primitive nature is a constant inspiration for expanding her metaphysical studies.

She is currently working on another Arthurian romance with Morgana le Fey as the heroine.

A Note From Suzanne Shanken

I first learned about the adventures of the gallant King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table from my father’s bedtime stories.  Thus began my love for anything Arthurian.  I spent hours reading the many tales written about King Arthur.  Yet, the more I read, the more I realized my father left out the part about Gwenevere’s adultery and Morgana le Fey’s evil witchcraft.  In fact, he skirted the entire issue of how the authors depicted all the women characters as villains.  The men who wrote these medieval tomes lived when the church was the most powerful cultural influence of the times, and clerical opinion was the highest authority of the day.  The church decreed women to be inferior to men and thus it became law.  These things reflected in the tales of King Arthur written by sexually frustrated monks and gender-bias writers.

I attempt to remedy this and give these poor women a break in history by writing my book ‘The False Gwenevere’.  There is no adulterer or evil woman.  Gaenor, Gwenevere’s twin sister, needs no 'Knight in Shining Armor' to rescue her.  She rescues herself and saves the fey land of Annwn to boot.
