Val Conrad

Growing up in a small town in West Texas, writing started as a way for an angry teenager to communicate with her parents without all the shouting. Then I found high school journalism, and became the editor of the weekly school paper for two years. Someone once said of me that I could not sign my name in less than 300 words. It's still true.

I found it difficult to think I could cover news but not change the outcome, so I switched from journalism to emergency medicine, spending over two decades as a paramedic in a number of states coast to coast. EMS took me into teaching those topics, and I also began writing more for professional reasons. From the "International Journal of Emergency Mental Health," I turned into fiction.

"Blood of Like Souls" started off as something quite different than it is now, sporting a cover that does not hide its reality of crime, so it's not a warm and fuzzy story. However, it's a tale of how one woman and her past get drawn into a series of murders, getting closer to her until she must make a decision about who lives and who dies.
