"It is in the 1950's and Jim, who is almost nine years old, helps his mom support the family because his dad is too sick to work. He sometimes is allowed to escape to "Painter's Island", a magical place where he can be a kid again. Follow him as he jumps off sawdust piles, digs up buried treasure, has sword fights with his friends, and tries to fly."
“Ready for liftoff,” I said running up the grade. I did a somersault in the air and my sisters yelled and cheered when I landed. Next Cathy performed her circus act. She tried to do two somersaults, to prove she was better than me, but only completed it partially and landed on her face. She got up and the hot sawdust stuck to her face. It was quite a sight and we laughed at her.
“It’s not funny,” she said. But it was and this made us laugh that much harder. Finally my youngest sister, Maggie, decided it was her turn and headed up the mountain. At the end she chickened out and tried to stop, but she was too close to the end and landed on her face. It was then she realized this was fun and made another run. This time she did a somersault and landed gently on her back. We both viewed this as a major feat for her and started cheering and whistling.
“Let’s play pirates,” I said.
