Review:
Zev and Jonah's relationship started before either of them really was aware of the world. As babies and toddlers they were drawn to each other, and this feeling led to becoming best friends throughout their elementary, middle, and high school years. Zev is the future alpha, a huge man with a heart of gold. Jonah is the one with the dreams, the one who goes off to be a doctor after high school. Along the way the boys contend with all manner of problems like the fact shifters stay to themselves and their kind, and most especially that there are no gay shifters. Jonah also feels the pull of Zev, who is his true mate, even though he's human and this type of bond should not be this strong. The toll being mated without being able to fully bond takes on Zev and Jonah brings them perilously close to the end. After so many years can they now cement the bond that has held them together for so long?
Where to start with this superb novel filled with amazing characters who will make you ache for them? Zev, as the alpha is just so much like you wish a great alpha would be, forward thinking, tolerant, living in the world and understanding where the pack needs to go in the future. Jonah as the one who continues to strive for his dream, to be a doctor like his father. The fact that we get to see them grow up together; it was just precious and enthralling and like an inner tube ride down a long and winding river on a warm day with a great breeze. You just know this is a once in a lifetime journey you are never going to forget. The undertones of discrimination and separation that permeate the pack and the humans all lend to an understanding of this time, this place that holds these two men in its grip. Some authors I just connect with immediately and this is one of those authors. Wake Me Up Inside is about the "who" not the what or the why or the how. A wonderful story that should be savored like the best chocolate. There is no better place to lose yourself for a few hours than in this author's fine words!
