Some lovers never leave you...
Twenty years ago she had her whole life spread out before her like a mesmerizing map. She was Bess Walsh, a fresh-scrubbed, middle-class student ready to conquer the design world. And she was taken. Absolutely and completely.
But not by Andy, her well-groomed, intellectual boyfriend who hinted more than once about a ring. No. During that hot summer as a waitress and living on the beach, she met Nick, a dark haired, local bad boy. He was, to put it mildly, not someone she could take home to Daddy.
Instead, Nick became her dirty little secret; a fervent sexual accomplice who knew how to ignite an all-consuming obsession she had no idea she carried deep within her.
Bess had always wondered what happened to Nick after that summer, after their promise to meet again. And now, back at the beach house and taking a break from responsibility, from marriage, from life, she discovers his heartbreaking fate--and why he never came back for her. Suddenly Nick's name is on her lips...his hands on her thighs...dark hair and eyes called back from the swirling gray of purgatory's depths.
Dead, alive, or something in-between, they can't stop their hunger.
She wouldn't dare.

Review: Bess hasn’t been to her grandparent’s beach house in twenty years. But now her life is falling apart and here she is, standing by the ocean she spent so many of her teenage summers by. It brings back a flood of memories, many of them erotic, and centered around one man- Nick. She is drawn to the water and while she lies in the waves, she finds someone else’s hands on her body- Nick’s. How it’s possible, she doesn’t know, but here he is, pulled right from her own mind. But not quite alive. He doesn’t breathe or eat or bleed, and he’s exactly the same as he was twenty years ago. All he can say is that he was in the gray, but cannot, or will not, go into any further depth. All she knows is that she doesn’t want him to go. But is she imagining him? Is she crazy? And what will her children think when they come to stay with her?
I didn’t like Deeper- it was too predictable and just not my style. There’s not a lot to get you into the story- only light drama, sketchy characters that are hard to identify with, and no understanding of what’s going on until the end of the story. It was really annoying not knowing what actually happened to Nick until the very end of the story, and the way the chapters went back and forth between the past and the future was really irritating- sure, a few chapters like that would have been ok, but the whole book? And the idea of Nick coming back from the dead is hardly a new idea, and one that I’m not excited to see again. (A current popular medical TV show recently did almost the exact same thing -except the lover turned out to be a cancer-induced hallucination- and the show’s ratings suffered for it.) A decent read if you’re into unexciting, sort-of romantic drivel, but I’m just not.
