The Mother Of All Invention
What would have happened if Thomas Edison had ever stopped being curious and settled for what we already knew was possible in the world? We wouldn't have electricity, the light bulb, batteries or cement, all of which he invented.
When electric lighting first came along, some people called it 'black magic', because their minds were not open enough to conceive of a day when they would ever be able to pull a cord or push a switch and have light fill the room.
They were so rigidly fixed on the idea that candles were the very limit in the field of lighting, that they were probably quite shocked when gas lamps appeared, too.
You don't have to be a great inventor to be wise, but you do have to be open to innovations and be able to conceive that things that are not possible right now may one day be achieved.
You may come up with some ideas and inventions of your own if you do stay curious and keep your mind open to things that don't even exist yet or haven't been discovered.
But even if you don't want to be an inventor, it is still vital to your intelligence to be able to accept and imagine that there may be other realities out there, or that in the future, everything might be completely different. Because if you don't, your mind won't stretch.
Who ever knew that you'd be able to read this book either on printed pages, rather than in my scrawly handwriting (which most of you wouldn't be able to read anyhow), or on a digital screen? Curious people, that's who.
The Curious Researchers
When you look at the evolution of society, the number of inventions, and the fresh discoveries that have been made over the years, it is self-evident that curiosity must make you smarter.
No-one would have known how to create fire without some curious caveman first staring at two sticks and wondering what might happen if they were rubbed together. And we would never have had cheese, ice-cream or milkshake if some curious soul hadn't tried pulling a cow's udder to see what would happen.
