The Wager, the second book in The Ravenna Evans Series.
Set in Belize seven years after The Last Killiney ends, The Wager is about how Ravenna Evans, lonesome and bored, is kidnapped by the scruffiest of outlaws. The grandson of a murderous smuggler, Bill Wyckham may look like a pirate, but his moustache and goatee hide the most handsome face Ravenna's ever seen - attractive enough to make her forget the passing of her dear husband, Paul. However, when one possesses a time-travel potion, dear departed husbands don't stay dead for long.
It startled her when Wyckham moved nearer, until she felt his shoulder nudge hers, the thickness of his dreadlocks brush her temple where he laid his head close. "I'll tell you," he whispered. Ravenna didn't move, nor react as the breeze stirred tendrils of his hair into her face. "I'll disclose what he didn't want you to know, but for a price, m'lady."
"A price?"
She felt the weight of his hand now, motionless at her back. She withdrew a bit, enough to see his features lit by sunshine. His eyes seemed made of chocolate, matte brown, warm and immediate as he waited earnestly three inches off. The slightest hint of a grin played at the corner of his lips. "One kiss, m'lady." Partially hidden by his scarf, his brows emphasized the request, and with his nearness, the heat of his side against hers, she couldn't deny it: beneath the wild hair and kohl, he was...
"No." She said it reflexively, pushed him away with a fettered hand. Beautiful - that's what she'd wanted to say. It was a trick of the light, surely. He'd been attractive back in Ireland, true, but not here, not with a moustache bushy enough to hide a whole litter of baby mice.
