Two unexpected things happen while Rahenna is feeding off a fisherman in the Azores. First, she feels the shock of a distant fledgling's reversion to mortality, a rare occurrence among vampires. Then, with a more disturbing blast of pain, she realizes her seemingly ordinary host has somehow been feeding off her. Overcome by a debilitating illness she doesn't understand, Rahenna goes into a five-month period of healing dormancy.

Once her vigor is restored, she travels halfway around the world to confront the beloved fledgling who has reverted. She finds Adin Swift on the verge of his thirtieth birthday--his first real birthday in 660 years. But Rahenna's presence turns out to be an unwelcome one. The fisherman's bites have infected her with a vicious, amoral aggression that seems to be unleashed by sexual hunger. Not only is the gorgeous Adin Swift in danger, so is everybody Rahenna finds physically attractive. Appalled by her inexplicable behavior, she struggles desperately to control it; her efforts are only sporadically successful.

Rahenna hovers over Adin’s birthday celebration to ensure that other curious vampires who’ve been drawn to the event don’t disrupt it. Like a mother, she still feels protective of him. Her flash-fire hunger, though, erupts again and again. It is only through the intervention of an even older and more powerful immortal, Rugh, that Rahenna finds temporary relief, as well as an explanation for what has beset her and the possibility of a cure. The more drawn they are to each other, the more it's time for some sexual healing . . . vamp style.
