Late 1960's. Time of the Vietnam War, hippies, fishnet hose, and mini-skirts. Add a flirtatious wink from the baby blues of 'love'em and leave 'em' Parker Shane and sixteen-year-old Darlene Moore wonders if she'll ever be the same.
Winner of the 2009 P&E Readers Poll in the YA category, When the Bough Breaks is more than a romance tale. Combining suspense, intrigue, and danger, Miss Mae pens a riveting story that keeps readers on the edge of their seats and gasping, "What's next?"
The door re-opened. Darlene glanced up and immediately choked on her swallow of ice cream.
Parker Shane stood at the threshold
.
Clad in snug-fitting blue jeans, he wore a leather jacket halfway unzipped. Its black color enhanced the golden sheen of his blond hair. At sight of the girls, his dark brows rose slightly. Then, that same easy grin Darlene first saw at Fat Man’s appeared. “Oops. Wrong door.” His blue eyes went to Darlene. “Hi there.”
She snatched a napkin to her mouth to cover her fit of coughing. Blessedly, she was saved from having to try and reply with some kind of answer. Margo jumped to her feet.
“Hi,” she greeted Parker, a pretty blush staining her cheeks. “What a surprise to see you.”
A casual hand raised to show a sealed envelope. “I’m dropping off your dad’s paperwork for Mr. Ryan.” His grin broadened as he continued to watch Darlene.
“Um…” Margo made an awkward gesture at the dessert plates on the table. “Mr. Ryan invited us for lunch.”
“Lucky man.” Parker’s deep voice lowered even more.
Darlene caught Margo’s flustered glance. The blonde hesitated, her bottom lip caught between her teeth. Parker moved away from the door and came toward Darlene.
“You and I have met.” He extended a hand in introduction. “Remember?”
She stiffened. Reference to his flirty wink at Fat Man’s in no way, no how, suggested they’d “met”. Deciding to set the record straight, she arched a haughty brow. “Can’t say that I do.”
“Oh, I’m not believing that.” He spoke with such conviction that her pulse revved into overdrive.

Darlene Moore is not allowed to date until she’s eighteen. Her mother doesn’t want her daughter to repeat mistakes she had made or jump into a situation she’s not ready for at an early age. This leads to some interesting situations for Darlene. She turns down a date with a star football player and then Parker Shane starts showing up at her every turn. Not long after her eighteenth birthday, her mother suddenly dies and Darlene moves to live with relatives, putting the brakes on her budding romance with Parker.
Parker Shane moves back to town after spending time serving his country in Vietnam. He quickly becomes fixated on Darlene, but she rebuffs his every move. He can’t get over the fact that he was born without a father and thinks that’s why she keeps refusing him. He decides that he needs to better himself to gain her attention and gets a job with Ryan Works. He quickly makes an impression on the owner Richard Ryan. Mr. Ryan is known as Uncle Richard by many of the youth in town, he's also a beloved friend of Darlene's.
When The Bough Breaks is an intriguing story that pulls you in and holds you until the very end. The characters are so real they could be your next door neighbors or your best friend. The story is set in the late 1960’s, but is still relatable to the present. You follow Darlene as she goes through the trials and tribulations of growing up in a single parent family and learning to adjust to life changes. Then after the death of her sister, we follow along with Darlene as she returns to Dalesville to find out what really happened and to see whether there is still the possibility of a second chance with Parker. After all, who can resist the supposed bad boy in town? Don’t think you’ve solved the mystery behind whodunit, because Miss Mae will surprise you every time! If you’re looking for a sweet, clean romantic suspense-mystery, then this is the book for you. When the Bough Breaks is definitely a book that I would feel comfortable recommending to anyone, even my 13-year-old niece!
