Roxie's Protectors-Leif's Surrender is part of a series about werewolves. The protectors are werewolves who were brought together to form their own pack to protect the foretold one—Roxie, who has special abilities. Her abilities include magic and the special ability to be half-werewolf and half-human for an extended period of time.
In this installment of the series, we focus on Leif. The one thing about all of these werewolves, is that they are all drop dead gorgeous, built like you wouldn't believe and able to fight, as well as being great in bed! There is one thing that separates these guys and that is not all of these male protectors who help to protect Roxie have found their mates. Slowly but surely they all find their mates and succumb to the mating bond.
Leif has been a player for a long time and when he meets his mate while shopping for ice cream for a pregnant Roxie, he high-tails it away from her as fast as he can. He is running from the mating, but can he outrun the needs and desires that are coursing through him? Will he be able to resist and can he cope with his family when they find out that he has finally found his mate? What about Jaden? She thinks that she is plain and that no one as handsome as Leif would ever be remotely interested in her. How will she react after finding out that Leif is her mate and that he is also a werewolf?
A former member of the protectors is trying to find out who the foretold one is and kidnap her so that he can set her up as figurehead and rule all of the werewolf packs. The protectors are in place to see that this doesn't happen.
As part of a series, it is obvious that a reader would know the history of Roxie's Protectors, but it would not hurt to have some reference to who is who and what is going on and why, preferably somewhere near the beginning, so the reader can become either reacquainted with the characters who are about to make an appearance, or be introduced to them. For me, the focus was on Jaden and Leif, but I was left wondering who all of the other minor characters were and what role they had and their importance to Roxie and also the rest of the story as it involved both Jaden and Leif.
The story was also a bit short and we went very quickly from Leif running so fast from the mating bond that even Superman probably couldn't have caught him, to all of a sudden giving in to the bond and accepting it, and then telling Jaden what and who he was and then he was off again to meet a werewolf contact. After this everything happens so quickly, and while it was all explained away with the intense effects of the mating bond and the urgent need that mates have to be with each other, it happened too quickly in my opinion. The ease with which Jaden accepted what Leif told her was a bit improbable—no rejection or questioning—just the effects of the separation from her mate and then because her mate was in danger, the sudden decision to become a werewolf. Add to this the fact that after the turning, it is discovered that the rogue werewolf is in fact her father—the one she never knew, and it becomes a whole other ball game.
How will all of this affect Leif and what will the rogue Miles do with the knowledge that Jaden is his daughter? Will she be able to help her mate, or will her father turn on her and Leif?
I have to say that the things mentioned are just minor niggles on my part. What I liked about this story is that Jaden is accepted for who she is by Leif, even though she is not his type. He does come to love her—rather quickly in my opinion, which is due to the strength of the mating bond, but a bit hard to fathom for one who was trying so hard to resist the call of the bond and never thought he would submit to it. Jaden is a strong, yet also vulnerable, person who has been through a lot in her life. The intensity of the relationship between the two is evident, as is their attraction for each other. Can they survive together or will they be torn apart before they really get to know each other? Read Roxie's Protectors-Leif's Surrender to find out!
