Steve Chambers's supremacy as top diver has never been challenged until now. Not only has he been beat out for the week by a rookie diver, it turns out Rodriguez is a she. Adding injury to insult, he’s paired with her to fix the submerged diving station they use for treasure recovery.
Maria Rodriguez has had to beat every man she’s worked with, just to gain a semblance of equality. Her impoverished family relies on her to make enough money to support them as well as her, and to do that, second best is not acceptable. Beating Chambers was the hardest challenge she’s ever done.
Confined in a diving station at 150 feet below the surface, in arctic waters, the rivals work hard to repair the oxygen lines to the damaged station before it bleeds out. And even harder to one-up the other. The fire of their passionate rivalry blends with their undeniable sexual attraction until it explodes in fiery lust. But can they set aside their egos long enough to realize that together, they make a perfect team?
Publisher's Note: This book contains explicit sexual content, graphic language, and situations that some readers may find objectionable: anal play/intercourse.
Steve Chambers is a top diver. A newbie on to the scene has been beating him and he certainly isn't happy about the situation. He has been top dog for a long time and to get beaten by someone else is getting hard to take. He gets even unhappier when he is paired with Rodriguez to fix a problem with the diving station. Now it also turns out that the Rodriguez he has been competing against is not only better than him, but the he is actually a she.
Maria Rodriguez has to be better than the guys—otherwise she just wouldn't have gotten to where she is. She is diving to help her family and so has had to work hard to get ahead. Diving to fix the problem with the damaged station, however she makes a mistake and is injured. Now their problem is that she won't make it to the surface and their air is running out. What are they going to do? Can they work together and solve the problem? Will the sparks already between them erupt into a firestorm or will the depth and freezing cold waters smother them?
Maria and Steve are attracted to each other, but they are now also confined in a diving station at 150 feet below the surface, in arctic waters. Maria acts on her attraction to Steve after he saves her, and he pulls the 'we are coworkers' line. Maria gives as good as she gets and I like that she is a feisty go-getter. She knows what she wants and she doesn't hesitate to go for it. I really think that at this point Steve doesn't know what hit him and that is good as well, because being a typical male, full of himself and his abilities, he needs some grounding and Maria is just the person to ground him in more ways than one! Sex underwater was never as explosive, but one little niggle—in this day and age of safe sex, where would you put the condoms? Into the diving suit pocket?
These two are good for each other—one minute she has Steve mad enough to rip her throat out and the next their lovemaking is raw and passionate and then she makes him laugh. Their banter is funny and well written. She definitely has what it takes to tame this diver. Does he have what it takes to hold her and cherish her?
I liked Depth Charge, but some of the vocab seemed a bit strange—pillowy lips being an example. What on earth are they? Then she 'mewed'—she sounded like a gull or a high pitched kitten??? Did the writer mean mewled instead? Perhaps there were a few things overlooked in the proofreading, and while they jarred me, they don't really detract from the overall reading of the story and the development of the relationship between the two characters.
Add a shark to the mix, freezing temperatures, explosive sex underwater and you have an interesting read.
