A roller-coaster of emotion and some of the most emotionally dramatic BDSM scenes I’ve read in quite a while are contained within Invitation to Ecstasy by Nina Pierce. Ms. Pierce’s writing is very enjoyable. There’s a terrific balance of down-to-earth narrative, humor, and intensity that draws the reader along from the very first page.

Invitation to Ecstasy is a quick read that will suck you right into the lives of Sara and Derek. I laughed and I cried at different points of their story. Nina Pierce does a fantastic job of giving you enough details to understand the plot and the characters without drowning in them. Invitation to Ecstasy is one of my new favorite books.

Sara Lancaster believes she has healed enough to take the final step in her recovery, giving herself over to a Dom and trusting him with her submission. Derek Thomas is looking to find the Dom inside since an event with a submissive caused him to lose his confidence. Sara and Derek have a mutual friend who has invited both of them to enjoy a weekend at XTC, a pleasure playground for kinksters.
When Sara and Derek meet at the resort they connect and decide to play. Sara is holding back, holding that part of herself inside out of fear. Derek, whose confidence is shaky, pushes her to give herself to him but she cannot. Sara's husband, who is deceased, has damaged her so badly her ability to let go is questionable. Yet if she does not let go she will never be able to meet those needs she has inside to be submissive and to let herself go. When an incident happens and Derek believes he has pushed too hard, will Sara conquer her fears and give both of them a chance to heal?
Invitation to Ecstasy allows you to enter the mind of a submissive and to get a feel for that internal push that makes submission so much a part of their lives, that fulfillment as necessary as air, water, and food. Sara's ability to section herself off and hold that piece of herself inside will resonate with anyone who has had experience with fear, trauma, or learning to love again. Though Derek is probably about 10 years younger than Sara the age piece does not really affect anything as Sara is portrayed as looking younger anyway. The lengths that Sara has to go to inside to release her fears and overcome them make you wish fervently that she succeeds. It would have been nice to have more history on both Sara and Derek though you get a feel for Sara more than Derek; his past history seems like it would be interesting and I found myself wondering how he came to understand his needs and exactly what it was that happened to shake his belief in himself so badly. The BDSM scenes were nicely done and were realistic. I enjoyed traveling along with Sara as she broke through her barriers!
