MR Review
Maritime Men by Janey Chapel Candidates Cooper and Eli are going through training to become SEALs. In the harsh environment where the men must rely on each other implicitly to survive, these two men become closer than they envisioned. What starts as helping each other soon develops into a strong attraction that neither is willing to question or give up. Under the sometimes overwhelming pressure of their lives in the military, these two men grasp at the chance for happiness, no matter how fleeting.
I loved the author’s short story Reflections of Love and thus when this military themed romance started garnering solid reviews I really wanted to read it. I wasn’t disappointed as the book delivers a wonderfully masculine experience, showing the true strength and bond between military men that occasionally includes sex. This short story is too short in that it leaves the reader wanting more, but isn’t missing anything. This is the perfect size story to introduce the men and focus on the connection between all of them, but especially Cooper and Eli. The ending is more of a happy for now versus a happy ever after considering both men are career military men and there is no way of guaranteeing they will always be stationed together but the slow emerging acceptance and delight in each other is well worth reading. The well-developed characters have an almost casual acceptance of their needs and desires without injecting a great deal of drama or angst to their choice. They simply know what and whom they need and there is no additional tension because it is two men versus a man and a woman. I loved reading Maritime Men and no doubt readers will also enjoy this offering. The military theme combines seamlessly with the romance aspect and ultimately delivers a wonderfully rich and textured story.
