Carlos looked down at me from his seat with a half-smile. The guy next to him was speaking in low, urgent tones, but I had his attention.

Other whores might try coy smiles or a flash of cleavage, but if you really knew El Jefe—and, unfortunately, I did—then you knew all you had to do was drop to his feet. Mia is not your typical heroine; she's tough, she's cynical, and she's a whore. Or she thinks she is a whore. Mia's life has been traumatic, starting with growing up on the wrong side of the tracks through being abused by her father and ultimately ending up with a crime lord, Carlos. Carlos enjoys pain and humiliation but he gets his kink on through dubious or non-consenting women. Even when they are consenting (like Mia) it is sort of a coerced submission filled with threats and recrimations such that they have no other choice. Mia finds herself with Carlos after he literally rescues her from the gutter and feels as if she has very little she can do to change her life. The best, she thinks, that can be hoped for is she will die bringing to light one of Carlos's vices, human trafficking. Tyler is undercover trying to expose Carlos. The secret is Mia grew up with a huge crush on Tyler so the humiliation and pain in front of him gets to her like nothing really has in the past. When they discover they are both working on the right side of the law but the wrong side of Carlos will they be able to escape the clutches of Carlos's painful grip?

Trust in Me as a title speaks to the theme of the story itself, when all else is gone and hope is only a glimmer who do you believe in? Mia's background, though horrific, is likely not unique in the underbelly of poverty ridden areas with criminal activity. Though we might all wish this was based on fiction it is too easy to picture a reality that mirror's the tragedy which has defined Mia's life to date. I thought it was courageous of the author to make the reader understand Mia is a victim yes, but she is also a survivor. She says and does things that, frankly, do not make her relatable in some ways. She makes choices that some of us don't understand, can't understand. Yet she remains fully human and flawed like we all are. She is not a caricature of a character, she is the real deal.

Tyler is a bit more stereotypical. The Knight in Shining Armor but he is not exactly what he seems. Really nobody is in this book except maybe Carlos. It is fascinating that Carlos's first acts with Mia were of the same knight mentality as Tyler. What happens when the veneer of humanity is suddenly stripped from Mia's eyes just hits you right in the gut as a reader. Carlos as the villain is perfect, with enough nastiness to make you want to take him out in a painful way. No redemption for him, he is evil itself. The story has a great deal of suspense though not necessarily edge of your seat but more anticipation and expectation. It felt like I was reading a much longer book and it was a very intense read. Palpable. Tight. 

I have to caution Trust in Me is not for those who want the "sunny side up" romance. All glittery and golden and without pain and torture. This is dark, gritty, and feels authentic to crime drama. Those who like to tread on the dark side with their erotica and who enjoy dubious or forced consent will enjoy this novel.
