From Hands Tied, a Hammer story By Sean Michael
Marcus finished the braiding on the whip he was making for Oliver and stretched. A glance at the clock told him it was much later than he'd expected. Jim should have had supper on over an hour ago, but he hadn't heard any movement or anything at all from upstairs since he'd come down to his workshop.
Frowning, he put everything away and headed upstairs to look for his baby.
The light was on in Jim's office, the sound of typing quick and somehow sharp. Marcus sighed, shook his head, and headed in, knocking, but not waiting for a response. He went right in.
Jim's head was down, books scattered everywhere. Marcus was surprised the keyboard wasn't smoking.
"What on earth are you doing, baby?"
"Shh. Working." Those fingers didn't stop.
"Jim." The word growled out of him.
"I'm busy, Marcus. Really."
"It's almost seven, baby. You should have stopped working at four. Is that your novel?" He moved to stand behind Jim's chair, hands dropping to his baby's shoulders.
"Editing work. I have a client that's fucking with a deadline." Jim was so tense.
He grunted, his hands tightening on Jim's shoulders. "You tell them you're sorry, but you cannot make the new deadline. You do not work yourself into a frenzy. You have a schedule, baby. You need to maintain it." When was Jim going to learn to put himself first?
"I can't. I need to finish this."
That word -- can't -- was not allowed. "Don't make me unplug the computer."
Jim knew better than this; why was he letting some client get him all lathered up?
"Don't you dare." Jim stared at him. "He called me an overeducated TA. We'd worked together five years."
Ah. It was beginning to make sense. "He's an asshole, baby. Give him his money back and tell him to go to hell." Marcus was willing to bet this asshole needed Jim to write the article far more than Jim needed to write it, edit it, whatever.
Years as a professor and one girl with money and a bad GPA and his baby's career had been destroyed. Damn it.
He really wished Jim could put all those assholes behind him, and concentrate on his own work. "Save what you've got done, baby and turn off the computer. I mean it."
"But..." Jim's fingers moved, even though those eyes didn't leave his.
"Five. Four. Three..."
"Master!" Jim shivered, tiny pierced nipples going hard under the tight T-shirt.
"Two. One." He leaned forward, fingers moving toward the on/off button on the compute tower.
"Don't..." Jim grabbed his wrist, his baby begging for punishment.
