Leaving the woman, he heads for the lobby to get the situation rectified. But an unexpected text from Madame Evangeline sends him back to his room, though unsure whether the woman on the bed is really his perfect match or just another fan believing him to be like his character on television. To find out, he must risk telling her his own secrets. If Tamara can handle his imperfections, she just might be his ideal woman.

 

As soon as she opened the door, he spun her into his arms. Instead of another kiss, he ripped the tags off the clothes and set them on the counter. “Charge them to my room.” He grabbed her hand and yanked her out of the boutique.

If she hadn’t seen the fear in his eyes, she would have been pissed that he pulled her with so much force. “What’s going on? My other clothes are still in the other room.”

He slowed his pace, but didn’t stop. “I’m sorry, Tamara, but we’ve got to leave, now.”

The pretty concierge appeared before them. “Mr. Summers, can I have someone get your car for you?”

“Thank you, Victoria, but I’ll get it myself from the garage. Could you possibly retrieve Tamara’s clothes from the dressing room of the boutique and take them back to my room?”

“Sure thing.” Victoria handed him his keys. They continued through the hall then down the stairs, her new shoes barely touching the ground.

Who the hell is this guy and what are we running from?

Shit! I can’t go anywhere without someone getting out their camera.He raced with Tamara in tow, trying to keep her from the intrusive life he lived. He wasn’t ready to bring anyone into the spotlight with him yet.

But he had to get out of the hotel first. He unlocked his car and held the door open for her. Even when trying to beat the paparazzi, he still believed in chivalry. After shoving her inside a bit too roughly, he muttered an apology, closed her door then rushed around to the driver’s side. Throwing the car in reverse, he squealed the tires in a rush to get out of the parking garage. How much time did he have? He didn’t know, but if the paparazzi followed him, he’d have to pull some fancy maneuvers to lose them before driving to his destination.

They made it to the street before he was temporarily blinded by the first flashes. Tamara shrieked when someone knocked on her window, right before another flash of light.

I have to get away from this, get her away from this.

Short but sweet is how I would describe Beneath the Starry Sky by Jessica E. Subject. Part of the loosely connected 1 Night Stand series, Madame Evangeline the exclusive matchmaker works her magic again by bringing together two physically scarred and also, to an extent, mentally scarred people.

Beauty is only skin deep, but when you lose something that defines you as a person and also affects how others see you, then your self-esteem plummets and you begin to wonder what it will take for people to look at you and see the person you are inside, not the external you. Tamara Johnson was dumped by her boyfriend when she developed alopecia and Josh Summers was a model before he was seriously disfigured in an accident. He gets chased by paparazzi who have no idea of his deformities, and Tamara is scared her life will just be a series of one night stands because of her affliction and because of what happened with the boyfriend, thinking no one will want to stay with a bald woman.

Both characters have their own issues and insecurities to deal with and it takes a lot for each of them to reach down deep and let go of their fears, but it is also an enlightening process for both Tamara and Josh. Tamara comes to realize it is not the hair that matters. Josh also comes to realize that no matter what Tamara looks like, she does understand and she doesn’t shy away from his injuries. Both are wounded but they can help each other find inner peace and acceptance and more importantly the love and companionship that each has been seeking.

I like these stories about Madame Eve and her matchmaking service that is not just for the beautiful and rich and famous. These stories are more than just tales of matchmaking, of two people coming together and meeting and then making love and finding acceptance. These are personal journeys of growth and discovery, of their own strengths and of conquering their fears. Despite the shortness of the tales, you get drawn into the stories and you become invested in finding out what happens and how the characters deal with their issues and how they end up coming together after a little help or push from Madame Eve.
